Eind goed al goed voor Parker Bowles
Hij kwam als een onbekende Canadees naar Tilburg, maar groeide in no time uit tot een ware publiekslieveling. Zijn naam rolde veelvuldig van de tribunes van IJssportcentrum Stappegoor. ‘Pa-Pa-Pa-Parker Bowles….Parker Bowles…Parker Bowles’. Een terugblik op een bewogen week met als kers op de taart de Oberliga Meisterschaft, zijn eerste echte kampioenschap.
Het was Parker’s landgenoot Brock Montgomery die Trappers’ Nation na de winst in de halve finale tegen Hannover Scorpions attendeerde op het feit dat de finale tegen Deggendorf voor Bowles een primeur betekende als het ging om spelen voor een kampioenschap. ‘2011 was the last time I was in the Finals (with Kootenay Ice (Western Hockey League)). That was an unbelievable feeling. I’ve been chasing that high ever since. Going back and have another chance of winning a Championship is a great feeling. Not only for me but for Parker (Bowles) too. He’s never been in a Championship series before so that’s cool for him.’
Met drie punten waaronder een short-handed doelpunt kreeg de mogelijke kampioensspanning in het eerste finaleduel tegen de sterkste ploeg uit de Oberliga Süd geen grip op de Canadees uit Kelowna (British Columbia). De grote smile op het gezicht van de getructe forward na afloop verraadde zijn emotie. ‘It was cool. I’m taking it all in and doing everything to help the team win. I treat it as another game. When you start to do and think too much things starting to go wrong so I stick with my normal preparation.’
Een roekeloze center ice hit van Deggendorf defenseman Robert Peleikis maakte twee dagen later een vervroegd einde aan de postseason van Bowles. Diagnose: een forse hersenschudding. ‘Going out with an injury was tough. But sometimes things happen for a reason.’ Even leek Parker alsnog acte de présence te kunnen geven in de tweede uitwedstrijd van de best-of-5 serie, maar al snel bleek dit ijdele hoop. ‘I took warm-ups. But a couple of nagging things. I just didn’t want to risk it. I sat on the bench the whole time, stayed positive and cheered on the guys.’
De winnende treffer van Ryan Collier zorgde voor dolle vreugde bij de 23-jarige winger/center. ‘I actually had a real good spot on the bench there. I was sitting nice and cosy and saw it go in over the goalie’s left shoulder. I think I jumped and screamed like a little girl. It was an unbelievable feeling to throw my gloves and helmet off. I jumped over the boards so fast and trying to chase Ryan down the ice and celebrate.’
Met het winnen van zijn eerste echte kampioenschap (‘I won some minor youth tournaments. But this is something else. I couldn’t be happier being a Champion.’) Parker got the monkey off his back. ‘It was a long loud bus ride back to Tilburg. I didn’t get a lot of sleep but it’s something you want to soak in. It was a lot of fun!’ Sowieso kijkt hij met veel genoegen terug op het seizoen. ‘It was an awesome year. No complaints. I had great linemates with Danny (Stempher) and Reno (de Hondt). Everyone helped me to have a successful year. And the team winning the Championship. That was the most important thing of course.’
Wat de toekomst op ijshockeygebied voor de sympathieke Canadees gaat brengen weet hij nog niet. ‘Me and the girlfriend are going to stay here for a little bit. Travel around Europe and check some things out. Maybe grab a game or two at the World Championships. We’ll see how it works out.’
